FUENTE ALQUERIA

Fontain of Alquería

Throughout its ancient history, the inhabitants of this land have had to spend a lot of time and effort in order to quench their thirst. Water has always been essential to humankind, and this has been reflected in the careful preservation of springs and water channels.

Parauta has 5 springs within the village itself: Pozuelo, Alquería, Fuentezuela, Fuente de Abajo and Fuente Nueva. It also has another 15 springs far from the village like that of Pilar de Conejeras.

Fuente Alquería was of great importance for the supply of the municipality until the installation of plumbing supplied running water to the houses between 1965 and 1970. Although there is no record of the date of its construction, the place name "Alquería" suggests that there was already a fountain here during the Islamic period.

The fountain consists of a square pond, each side 2 metres long, with a vaulted cover with a brick facade  over supporting walls. There was also once a trough which would have been used tol et cattle drink and for doing laundry. Nothing of this trough remains, but where it once stood, there is now and enormous Spanish Fir, which is watered by the fountain.

From the viewing point there are excellent views of the sierras of Jarastepar and Oreganal of the los Riscos and the la Cancha de Almola
